We face forks in the road daily, forks where we make a choice to go one way or another, forks where we turn toward health or move toward what feels like a dead end path. We progress on a progressive journey and move regardless of self-initiation. It is one of those conundrums where a non-decision is actually a decision as we don’t get to stop the world, there is no opportunity to get off and life will continue to move whether we give our permission or not.
Recovery is about growth and growth comes with dedication, change and commitment to develop what is ours in the benefit of our greater good. This means in the long run. The result is we minimize consequences that result from actions to achieve immediate gratification. Delaying satisfaction is hard, challenging and may not be gratifying in the present moment. We delay gratification knowing that the outcome will make us better and improve our lives. When temptation arrives and when we feel challenged we rely on tangible experience and rely on the decision.
We gain strength by looking back – acknowledge that we may not have always gotten what we wanted, but have always gotten what we need. We may have tried to close the door on our higher power, but It never left us (Footprints). We may forget, but we know if we stay in the moment we are safe.
Most of all we remember the meaning of: “Don’t quit five minutes before the miracle happens.”
